Make it Maidstone and Make a Difference.

That is the message that Town Centre Management wants to get across during its volunteer week from October 24 to 31.
It will be welcoming charities, churches and other groups to the Mall Chequers during the week to highlight their activities and, hopefully, attract more volunteers to help them.

The exhibitors will include such diverse groups as Trinity Foyer, Lily Smith House, Parkwood Plus, the Blackthorn Trust, the Red Cross, BTCV-Maidstone Health Walks and the Medway Valley Country Partnership.

In all, more than 35 groups will be given a platform during the event, which will form part of the nationwide CSV (community service volunteers) Make a Difference Day on October 31.

We hope not only to make residents more aware of the number and nature of the charities and other groups in the town and the services they offer, but also to realise just how rewarding volunteering can be.

Towards the end of the week the focus will be on charities and groups that help people who are homeless or who have drug or alcohol abuse problems.

The event will culminate on the night of Saturday, October 31 with more than 200 Scouts sleeping in shop doorways in the Mall Chequers, to highlight the plight of the homeless.

The aim is to give a better understanding of why people become homeless and provide information about the services available to them.
The event is being sponsored by new TCM member Signs and Imaging of Bredhurst Business Park, Boxley.

MD Dean Johnson explained his reasons for backing the week, saying: "Since I joined TCM I've had a lot of support from them and I've had a lot of work come in so this was my way of saying thank you to them".

Dean added "I also know that people who volunteer do a lot of good work and it is nice to be able to help them".

Our grateful thanks to Dean for making this hugely worthwhile event possible. Many thanks as well to Nu-Venture buses who have given us free advertisements for Make it Maidstone and Make a Difference on the back of some of their buses.

Make It Maidstone and Make A Difference Day (and week) takes place from October 24th until October 31st 2009.
