What do you think about the way we drink?
Nicky Campbell hosts events where you can make your voice heard.
Whether you share a bottle of wine with your evening meal to relax
after work, enjoy a few pints on a Friday night, or don’t drink at
all, alcohol is an issue we all have an opinion on. This November,
the Big Drink Debate is inviting people in the South East to share
their thoughts and concerns about alcohol, along with ideas for what
the region should do to address them.
The Hazlitt Arts Centre, Maidstone, will host a Big Drink Debate
discussion event chaired by Nicky Campbell on Tuesday 24th
November at 7-9pm. A panel of representatives from the NHS, police,
the alcohol industry and consumer bodies will feed into the audience
debate, covering issues such as our drinking culture in the South
East, what action should be taken to tackle excessive drinking and
when it is acceptable to binge drink.
The Big Drink Debate is aiming to understand the South East’s
attitude to alcohol, looking at how much people consume and how they
perceive alcohol related health and social issues.
David Sheehan, Development Manager for the Public Health Group South
East, which is behind the project, said:
“We know that men and women in the South East have relatively high
rates of drinking compared to those in most other regions. Whether
you drink or not, we want to hear your opinion about alcohol in the
South East – what you’re most concerned about and how you’d like to
see those issues addressed.”
Iain Loe, Research and Information Manager for the Campaign for Real
Ale (CAMRA) said:
“While alcohol is associated with problems in our society, the
brewing industry, community pubs and traditional beers and ciders
are an important part of our heritage, and a source of enjoyment for
many drinkers in the South East. We look forward to joining the Big
Drink Debate.”
A number of areas in the South East have rates of hospital
admissions for alcohol-related conditions above the national
average. Despite the region being one of the safest in the country,
there are many violent crimes each year and communities are
reporting concerns about anti-social behaviour – alcohol can play a
significant part in both areas.
Maidstone has been chosen to host a Big Drink Debate event as it is
fairly typical of the South East in relation to its demographics,
wealth distribution and alcohol-related admissions to hospital.
Following the events, a Big Drink Debate manifesto will be launched
in December, incorporating the results of research from across the
region and the views and opinions of participants in the Big Drink
Debates. The manifesto will inform future alcohol priorities in the
South East.
The Big Drink Debate is being led by the local NHS and the
Government Office for the South East, with close involvement from
police, the drinks industry, retailers, local charities and
universities among others.
