MAIDSTONE’S HOPE TO BE FIRST TOWN TO ‘BIN’ THE PLASTIC BAG IN
KENT
Maidstone Town Centre Management is fronting an ambitious campaign
to rid the town of plastic bags by 31 March 2009 in its ‘Bin the Bag
campaign.’
With a world that is clogged up with the plastic debris of a
throw-away society, Town Centre Manager, Bill Moss, is taking a
brave step forward in trying to make the town centre plastic bag
free and help Maidstone to be a greener town for the benefits
locally and world-wide.
Bill Moss commented that: “Most people will agree we need to do
something to reduce the use of plastic bags, so town centre
management has taken the lead with an ambitious plan to Bin the
(plastic) Bag. We are asking all town centre retailers to find an
alternative to plastic bags and we will be giving away 10,000 bags
to independent shops to kick-start the campaign, but we can’t hope
to succeed without the cooperation of shoppers who should begin to
question why they are being offered a plastic bag in Maidstone after
31 March 2009. While the independent shops will make their own
decision whether to continue with plastic bags after 31 March 2009,
the nationals will be guided by their head offices and I’m confident
people-power will eventually win through. With the support of
shoppers we will succeed in our campaign to Bin the Bag in
Maidstone.”
There will be a ‘Bin the Bag’ campaign, running in the lead up to
March, which will inform the public about how damaging plastic bags
are to our environment and will consist of petitions, exhibitions,
and ambassadors who will back the ban in Maidstone. Local Law firm
Brachers have sponsored an information pack which will be sent out
to all retail outlets in the town, offering them a sample paper bag
and details of why they should stop using plastic bags.
Bill goes on to say that: “We are also looking for key figures of
the county town and beyond to back the campaign as an Ambassador and
show their support to a change that will have a great effect
worldwide. There really is no excuse to use the current volume of
plastic bags and we will also be offering our visitors alternatives,
from paper bags and our own jute eco-bags to local charity bags and
‘mores’ bags, which can be sewn together from recycled materials
from a downloadable pattern that is available on our website.”
Statistics
- If each shop in Maidstone gave out 20 plastic bags per day, that
would equal more than 4 million bags every year
- Plastic debris causes the deaths of more than a million seabirds
every year
- They can clog up sewerage systems and take between 20-1000 years
to break down
- Plastic constitutes 90% of the rubbish floating in oceans
- There are 46,000 pieces of plastic litter floating in every square
mile of ocean on earth
- Marine scientists believe that microscopic plastic fragments in
the ocean can soak up pollutants which may then get passed up the
food chain into fish and, ultimately humans
- Nationally, we throw away 58 billion plastic items a year, which
is 1.5 Million tonnes and it is growing by 2-5% each year
- There is a swirling debris of plastic trash in the pacific ocean
that has grown to a size twice as large as the continental US
